techfortrade, IDE & Sangonet launch trading pilot

techfortrade has teamed up with Sangonet, a South African NGO and the Zambian NGO, International Development Enterprises (IDE), to launch a six month pilot trading project in Zambia. The pilot builds on an existing market linkages system called Limalink, which Sangonet and IDE have been deploying in 9 Zambian markets. Work on this service has identified an opportunity to extend these market linkages across the DRC border in order to benefit Zambian farmers through increased demand and DRC consumers through increased competition.

The pilot will test the processes required to establish a demand/offer based contracting system, using mobile technology with the objective of increasing smallholder cross border trade between the Zambia Copper Belt and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). If the pilot proves successful, the parties intend to extend the service further, within the Common Market for Eastern & Southern Africa (COMESA) region.
